One day I was in a pet shop on Long Island. They had an unusual fellow for sale who had been dropped off by somebody who could no longer keep him. I asked. He was a prairie dog, actually from the squirrel family--one of those cute things you see popping up out of holes the ground on nature shows on television. Before the cage was completely opened Otis had jumped out of the door, into my arms, and was clinging to me for dear life. “Buy me! Hold me! Hug me! Get me out of here!” Otis was a loving creature who only wanted to be loved in return. This was not a decision to make alone, but when Sandy and I returned together the next day, Otis had already been sold. Ten years later, we were looking for a mascot for the campground. A second Otis Prairiedog came to live with us. Like the first Otis he was a cute little fellow, full of life and fun, loving and only asking to be loved in return. His qualities of loyalty, friendship, straightforwardness, and honesty were all appreciated. They were qualities that expressed how Sandy and I lived and how we did business. When USED BOOKS, ETC. went online in 1999 a username was needed. Otisprairiedog was an immediate answer. Because of space restrictions, this was later shortened to otispd. Otis is no longer with us, but his spirit still is. We could not think of a better mascot and theme for our new webstore as our next venture begins. As you browse our site, you will see Otis popping up in special places. Look for his occasional comments and suggestions, but especially look for books highlighted with the Otis icon.
